Marriage Visitor Visa

Marriage Visitor Visa is a specifically designed category for foreign nationals planning to enter the UK for getting married or registering a civil partnership. The person with whom the applicant is going to get married or enter into a civil partnership should be a British national or has a “Settled Status” in the UK.

This type of visa is not suitable if the applicant is willing to settle in the UK after getting married or entering into a civil partnership.

 

Eligibility Criteria

The person applying for a Marriage Visitor visa should meet these eligibility requirements:

  • Age: 18 years or over
  • There should be no legal impediments to marry/give notice of marriage or enter a civil partnership in the UK
  • There must be a genuine relationship between the applicant and the person living in the UK
  • The applicant must intend to marry or enter into a civil partnership within six months of entering the UK
  • The applicant must have sufficient funds to bear the cost of living in the UK without relying on public funds

 

Giving Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership

The term “Give Notice” relates to an act where both the partners visit the local register office and notify in writing that they are getting married or entering a civil partnership. The applicant must have resided in the registration district for at least 7 days before giving such notice. 

After notifying the registered office, the partners have to wait for 28 days. This is the waiting period after giving the notice. The marriage ceremony can take place once this period is over.

 

Supporting Documents

Following are the documents required for Marriage Visit Visa.

  • Passport or any other valid travel document showing the identity
  • Bank statements, payslips, or a document showing you have sufficient funds to live in the UK
  • Documents showing the travel arrangements, tickets, hotel booking, or address of the premises where the applicant will stay
  • Must have proof/evidence showing that the relationship of both partners is genuine

 

What you are Permitted to Do Under this Visa?  

The Holder of a Marriage Visitor Visa can do the following things in the UK:

  • Can stay in the UK for six months
  • Marry or enter a civil partnership with your partner (within six months)
  • Register marriage or civil partnership at any location within the UK

 

What you are not Permitted to Do Under this Visa?

You are not allowed to do the following things in the UK while on a Marriage Visitor Visa:

  • Bring along dependents
  • Switch visa or seek an extension
  • Cannot work in the UK
  • Claim or access public funds
  • Start a course of study (over thirty days)
