UK Ancestry Visa is an immigration route specifically designed for Commonwealth citizens who have a UK-born grandparent. On the basis of this criterion, a Commonwealth citizen can enter the UK.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can live and work in the UK. However, the application for UK Ancestry Visa can only be initiated from outside the UK.

Eligibility Requirement

In order to obtain a UK Ancestry Visa, you must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • The applicant should be a Commonwealth citizen
  • Must have attained 17 years of age or older
  • Must have a grandparent who was born in any of the following locations before 31st March 1922:
  • UK
  • Isle of Man
  • Channel Islands
  • Republic of Ireland
  • You are willing to live and work in the UK
  • Your financial circumstances permit you to support your stay in the UK and that of your dependents if any. (Public funds not accessible)


Required Documents

  • Passport /Travel document
  • A document that serves as evidence to prove your relationship to British national ancestor
  • Document showing that you have sufficient funds
  • Tuberculosis test result (Applicable to some countries)
  • Attach a document that proves your intention to work in the UK or set up a business


What you are Permitted to Do Under this Visa?

You can do the following things when residing in the UK on Ancestry Visa.

  • You can work in the UK
  • Bring your family (partner/child or both)
  • Get admission in a course of study


What you are not Permitted to Do Under this Visa? 

Generally, there are no specific restrictions except the public funds. The holder of this visa is not allowed to access or claim the public funds. For the rest, you just need to follow the general guidelines associated with this visa.


A Step Towards Indefinite Leave to Remain

If you have obtained a UK Ancestry Visa, it will allow you to enter the UK and live there for the next 5 years. After the expiry of this period, you can be an eligible candidate for indefinite leave to remain (ILR).

However, to avail of this opportunity, you should provide sufficient evidence that you have been working in the UK for the last five years. Sufficient knowledge of Life in the UK and English language is also essential to obtain an ILR.

Besides, the number of days you have spent outside the UK during these 5 years shouldn’t exceed 180.
